Dessert
I’m modest, except when it comes to dessert—perhaps the only area where I categorically prefer things produced by myself.
Here’s a list of desserts by others that are, however, worth getting. These are first on my to-do-list when I travel. Let me know if I’m missing your favorites!
- Paris: Alain Ducasse (comparative advantage: pralines)
- Copenhagen: Democratic Coffee (almond croissant @7am), Grød (plain w/ caramel)
- Sydney: Edition Coffee (soufflé pancake, miso banana bread)
- Stockholm: SNÖ, Vetekatten, any bakery’s sourdough cardamom buns
- NYC: Cosme (the corn husk meringue)
- LA: Teddy’s Red Tacos (I know, but I’d skip dessert for these)
- Lisbon: Nannarella (tangerine), Bettina & Niccolo Corallo (chocolate)
- San Francisco: Craftsman & Wolves, Kantine SF, Black Sugar
- Canberra: Monster (whatever they’re making)
- Geneva: Läderach (only at the train station, get the Carrés Grand Cru)
- Göteborg: Café Husaren (best and biggest cinnamon bun)
- Kittery: Lil’s (cruller)
- Cambridge: Oleana (baked Alaska), Curio (waffle, only food on the menu for a reason)
- Varberg: Kvantum (smågodis, chokladboll, smörgåstårta—technically cake!)
- Berkeley: Caravaggio Gelato Lab, Bartavelle (savory scone)
(The most important aspect of fika is not the coffee, but also see this list of excellent coffee shops)
